Healthy Diet Plans

Overview

Healthy Diet Plans covers eating patterns that fit Indian kitchens — vegetarian, non-vegetarian, regional cuisines, festival eating — and the principles behind them. Our doctors and dietitians explain what counts as balanced, how to build sustainable habits, and why generic diet plans rarely survive contact with real Indian meal patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expert answers from our medical team

Which diet is best for weight loss?

The one you can sustain. Whether it's Indian traditional balanced eating, low-carb, Mediterranean, intermittent fasting, or plant-forward — sustained calorie deficit and adequate protein matter more than the specific style. Fad diets that eliminate entire food groups or promise rapid loss usually rebound. Slow, steady loss (0.5-1 kg per week) is more sustainable and less muscle-wasting than rapid loss.

Is intermittent fasting safe for everyone?

Not everyone. It's generally safe for healthy adults with normal weight or overweight, and can help with weight management and metabolic health. Avoid or be careful if: pregnant or breastfeeding, history of eating disorders, on diabetes medications that lower sugar (risk of hypoglycaemia), children and teens, older adults with frailty, or specific medical conditions. Discuss with your doctor before starting if you have any of these.

Should I go keto or low-carb?

Low-carb approaches can be effective for weight loss and diabetes management for some people, especially in the short-medium term. Strict ketogenic diets are harder to sustain long-term, especially with Indian food culture centred on rice and roti. Moderate carbohydrate reduction (not elimination) plus more protein and vegetables is often more sustainable and gives most of the benefit.

Do I need to eat 6 small meals a day?

No. The 'small frequent meals' advice was based on shaky evidence and doesn't hold up. Three larger meals, two meals with a snack, or various patterns all work — what matters is total daily intake and food quality. Constant grazing can make weight management harder for many people because they never fully feel hunger or fullness cues.

Are cheat days okay?

For most people trying to sustain healthier eating long-term, some flexibility (special occasions, family meals, favourite foods occasionally) is more sustainable than strict all-week discipline. Rigid rules often lead to bigger breakdowns. A weekend meal you enjoy without guilt is fine; a weekend of unrestricted eating that undoes your week isn't. The 80/20 approach — 80% consistent, 20% flexible — works for many.
