Frequently Asked Questions

Expert answers from our medical team

Which vitamin deficiencies are common in Indians?

Vitamin D deficiency is very widespread (despite abundant sun, due to indoor lifestyles, skin covering, and low dietary sources). B12 deficiency in vegetarians is common. Iron deficiency is common in women of reproductive age and children. Calcium intake is often below adequate. Vitamin A and folate deficiencies are seen in nutritionally poor diets. Testing rather than assuming is worthwhile before supplementing.

Do I really need a vitamin D supplement?

Likely yes if your levels are low — and most Indians tested come back low. Blood test (25-OH vitamin D) confirms. Supplementation dose depends on your level: many people benefit from 1000-2000 IU daily, with higher weekly or monthly doses for correcting deficiency under medical guidance. Sunlight exposure helps but is often insufficient for those with indoor lifestyles or darker skin.

Should vegetarians take B12?

Yes — vegetarian and especially vegan diets don't provide sufficient B12 for most people. B12 deficiency causes fatigue, tingling, memory issues, and — long term — nerve damage that can become irreversible. A monthly injection or daily oral supplement (1000 mcg) covers most needs. Test levels every 1-2 years if long-term vegetarian, more often if symptoms.

Are protein supplements safe?

Whey and plant-based protein powders are safe for healthy adults with normal kidney function when used as intended (a supplement, not the main protein source). Watch out for products with unnecessary additives, undisclosed steroids (a real problem in cheap Indian brands), or excessive doses. Anyone with kidney disease should discuss protein intake — including supplements — with a doctor.

Are Ayurvedic supplements safe alongside modern medicine?

Some interact with prescription medications or affect liver and kidney function. Others contain heavy metals or adulterants (a real problem with poorly regulated brands). If you take Ayurvedic supplements, tell your doctor — hidden interactions are common. Choose reputable brands, be sceptical of grand claims, and prioritise established remedies over 'proprietary formulations'.
