Urinary Tract Infections

Overview

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections worldwide. Women are far more susceptible than men — about half of all women have at least one UTI in their lifetime, and many have recurrent episodes. In India, delayed treatment, inadequate hydration, and increasing antibiotic resistance (particularly among E. coli strains) make UTIs more complicated to manage than they once were. A straightforward bladder infection (cystitis) causes burning urination, frequency, and pelvic discomfort. When the infection ascends to the kidneys (pyelonephritis) it becomes a serious illness with fever and flank pain. Knowing when to treat at home with fluids versus when to seek urgent care — and how to prevent recurrence — makes a real difference.
