Chronic Kidney Disease

Overview

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects an estimated 17% of adults in India, and most of them don't know it. The kidneys lose filtering capacity so gradually that symptoms — fatigue, swelling, poor appetite — appear only when function has already dropped by 60-70%. CKD is staged 1 through 5 based on estimated GFR (how well the kidneys filter); Stage 5 is kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant. Diabetes and high blood pressure together cause over 60% of cases in India. The good news: at Stages 1-3, the right treatment — blood pressure control, diabetes management, diet changes, and newer kidney-protective drugs — can slow or stop progression for years. Early detection through a simple blood and urine test is everything.
