Weight Management

Overview

Weight Management covers the medical reality of weight — metabolism, set points, what evidence-based approaches achieve, and when bariatric medicine is appropriate. Our doctors and editorial team explain why willpower-only approaches usually fail, what sustainable change looks like, and how Indian-context weight gain (urbanization, diet shifts) needs Indian-context responses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expert answers from our medical team

How much weight should I actually lose?

Depends on your starting point. For most people with obesity, losing 5-10% of body weight brings meaningful improvements in blood pressure, sugar, lipids, sleep, and joint pain. Chasing 'ideal weight' from BMI charts often fails; targeting waist size (under 90cm for men, 80cm for women in South Asians) and metabolic markers is more useful. Slow steady loss (0.5-1 kg per week) is more sustainable than rapid drops.

Why is it so hard for me to lose weight?

Common reasons: underestimating calorie intake (especially liquid calories and oil in cooking), sleep deprivation (raises appetite hormones), chronic stress, medication side effects, hypothyroidism or PCOS, prior weight cycling (which slows metabolism), and — most commonly — inconsistent effort over time. It's not just willpower; biology fights weight loss actively. Sustainable systems beat willpower.

Are weight-loss medications safe?

Modern GLP-1 medications (semaglutide, tirzepatide) can produce significant weight loss but have side effects and are expensive; they usually need to be continued indefinitely to maintain loss. Older medications have limited benefit. All weight-loss medications work best combined with lifestyle changes, not as replacements. A doctor with obesity medicine experience is worth consulting rather than self-prescribing from social media.

What about bariatric surgery?

For people with severe obesity (BMI over 37.5 for South Asians, or over 32.5 with comorbidities like diabetes) who haven't succeeded with other approaches, bariatric surgery is a well-evidence option — often dramatically improving diabetes and other conditions. It's not cosmetic; it's serious surgery with lifelong follow-up needs. Reputable centres in India offer good outcomes at fraction of Western costs.

How do I avoid regaining weight after losing it?

Same principles that helped lose weight, continued indefinitely — different phase, same rules. Regular monitoring (weekly weigh-in), sustained physical activity (often more than during loss), protein-adequate meals, sleep, and social support all matter. Complete return to old habits guarantees regain; the honest answer is that weight management is a long-term change, not a temporary project.
