Frequently Asked Questions

Expert answers from our medical team

When should I first see a doctor after a positive pregnancy test?

By 6-8 weeks — earlier if you have risk factors, symptoms, or prior pregnancy losses. First visit includes confirming pregnancy, dating scan, medical history, family history, current medications review, initial blood tests, and starting folic acid (should ideally have started before conception). Continuity through pregnancy with the same obstetrician (or trusted team) matters.

How often should I see the doctor during pregnancy?

Standard schedule: monthly until 28 weeks, every 2 weeks from 28-36 weeks, weekly from 36 weeks until delivery. More frequent for high-risk pregnancies. Between visits, contact the doctor for any worrying signs: severe headache, vision changes, severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, reduced fetal movements, or signs of preterm labour. Never delay contacting your doctor out of politeness.

What tests are standard during pregnancy in India?

First trimester: dating scan, blood group and Rh factor, complete blood count, HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, blood sugar screening, thyroid function, first trimester screening for chromosomal issues (11-14 weeks). Second trimester: anomaly scan (18-22 weeks), gestational diabetes screening (24-28 weeks, especially important in India), repeat CBC. Third trimester: growth scans, additional monitoring based on risk.

Is normal delivery still possible after a C-section?

For many women, yes — VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean) is safe in selected cases, depending on why the previous C-section happened, the type of uterine scar, spacing of pregnancies, and current pregnancy factors. India has a high C-section rate (often 50%+ in private hospitals) — some clinically necessary, some not. Choose an obstetrician who honestly discusses both options and supports VBAC when appropriate.

What are warning signs during pregnancy?

Heavy vaginal bleeding, severe or persistent headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, severe upper abdominal pain (right upper quadrant), sudden severe swelling in hands and face, severe or persistent vomiting, high fever, reduced fetal movements (after 28 weeks — count kicks, contact doctor if fewer than usual), signs of preterm labour (regular contractions, water breaking, low backache with pelvic pressure). Any of these needs immediate contact with your obstetrician.
