Frequently Asked Questions

Expert answers from our medical team

What are common hormonal problems in women?

Thyroid disorders (both under- and overactive, more common in women), PCOS, insulin resistance, adrenal issues, and — with age — perimenopausal and menopausal changes. Symptoms often overlap: fatigue, weight changes, mood changes, sleep issues, menstrual irregularity. A good workup includes TSH, blood sugar, sometimes prolactin, testosterone, cortisol, and — situationally — reproductive hormones.

What are the signs of a thyroid problem?

Underactive (hypothyroidism): fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin, hair thinning, constipation, low mood, menstrual changes. Overactive (hyperthyroidism): weight loss, fast heart rate, tremor, sweating, anxiety, insomnia. Any of these persisting for weeks warrants a TSH test. Thyroid problems are common in Indian women and easily treated once diagnosed.

How does PCOS affect long-term health?

Beyond fertility issues and menstrual irregularity, PCOS raises long-term risks of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, endometrial cancer, sleep apnea, and depression. Weight and metabolic management matter throughout life. Even after menopause, PCOS-related metabolic risks persist. Regular screening for these conditions is worth building into your care plan.

Are hormone tests worth doing?

For specific concerns — irregular periods, fertility issues, suspected thyroid problem, menopause management, PCOS workup — yes. Random 'hormone panel' testing without symptoms rarely helps and often generates confusing results. Hormones fluctuate normally by day and cycle. A good endocrinologist or gynaecologist targets which tests based on your symptoms.

Should I take hormone replacement therapy at menopause?

It's individual. HRT effectively treats menopausal symptoms (hot flushes, sleep issues, vaginal symptoms) and protects bone. It carries small increases in breast cancer, blood clot, and stroke risk — but the risk-benefit shifts by age, duration, formulation, and personal risk profile. For most women within 10 years of menopause with significant symptoms, short-term HRT is a reasonable choice under medical supervision.
