Gum Disease

Overview

Gum disease (periodontal disease) is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults worldwide — outpacing tooth decay in older adults. It begins as gingivitis, a reversible inflammation of the gum tissue caused by bacterial plaque accumulation, and can progress to periodontitis, where the inflammation destroys the bone and fibre that support teeth. In India, the prevalence of some form of gum disease among adults is estimated at over 70%. Risk factors beyond poor oral hygiene include diabetes (gum disease and diabetes have a bidirectional relationship), smoking (the biggest modifiable risk factor for periodontitis), stress, certain medications (that cause gum enlargement or dry mouth), and genetic predisposition. The good news: gingivitis is completely reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care. Periodontitis is manageable — bone loss doesn't reverse, but progression halts with treatment.
